Our primary text is Ted Gioia’s newest, Music to Raise the Dead. He has published it in installments on Substack and you can access it there fairly conveniently even if you are not paid a subscriber: Ted Gioia - The Honest Broker. (It’s totally worth paying for his content, as I do myself). I also have a version that I’ve cobbled together for easier access that I can provide to class members. Some of you will remember that we did a class using his truly marvelous book Music: A Subversive History, and this new one does NOT disappoint. It will provide ample opportunity for amazing insights and revelations—this will be fun, I assure you. And I’ll be able to provide “accessory texts” when needed to follow some of the tracks he points out for us along the way.
You can find the Table of Contents and start reading the book right now at THIS LINK.
We’ll pick up some of the many threads we left a while back, since this is #6 in an ongoing series of classes about the transformative power of music through history and in the moment. These themes fit so well with everything we have done in these online sessions for years—from shamanism and psychedelics, to weird studies and high strangeness phenomena, and on to Henry Corbin’s harmonic imagination and “arpeggios of distant Lights.” There is something here for everyone. Join us for a good time.

Nice this hero's story, songs. All heroes are semi-divine? Sons of gods with mortals? Hércules and Perseu part Zeus, Teseu part Poseidon, Aquiles part sea nymph Tétis... I'll talk about it with my students, the teenagers. Last thing, I guess hero is like an archetype, so If we're going to some sorth of hero journey, we get to get the help from some God? It might happen.
