Technologies of the Self
Some of you know that I’ve had a long-standing relation with Ezra Klein’s podcasts—since way before he got to the NYTimes. I’ve discovered a lot of people whose work has become really important to me through his interviews, including most recently Erik Davis and D. Graham Burnett. Back in July he did a great interview with Sean Illing and Zac Gershberg about Neil Postman, whose book Amusing Ourselves to Death was a touchstone for my wife and I back in the 80s. The podcast that dropped today is a continuation of those themes, and for me at least draws several lines of thought together very clearly and accessibly. I think it’s really important for everyone who shares my interest in “the imaginal” to think about the effect of these technologies on our immediate relationship with “reality” and the implications for societies, politics and individuals. I hope you’ll find it worth a listen (or two).
